Understanding and Integrating Multiple Science Texts: Summary Tasks are Sometimes Better Than Argument Tasks

2010

One of the major challenges of a knowledge society is that students as well as other citizens must learn to understand and integrate information from multiple textual sources. Still, task and reader characteristics that may facilitate or constrain such intertextual processes are not well understood by researchers. In this study, we compare the effects of summary and argument essay tasks when undergraduates read seven different texts on a particular scientific topic, finding that an instruction to write summaries may lead to better understanding and integration than an instruction to write argument essays. We discuss several possible explanations for this result. We also found that beliefs a…

Changing World: Changing Pedagogy

2012

The purpose of this chapter is to examine the requirements of the rapidly changing world of work with regard to vocational competences and professional expertise, as well as their pedagogical implications for vocational and higher education. On the basis of a brief literature review, a summary of required generic professional competences is presented. The second part focuses on the pedagogical implications of the changing world. First, traditional pedagogical practices which provide little contribution to the development of the kin…

Professional development for teachers: a world of change

2009

As the industrialised world shifted to an interdependent and global society, formal schooling was quickly recognised as a major factor in achieving a knowledge society of lifelong learners capable of transforming and revitalising organisations. Teachers were encouraged to engage in learning together to improve teaching and, by extension, improve learning for the children in their care. This article identifies three emerging trends intended to broaden teachers' learning and enhance their practices through continuous professional development: glocalisation, mentoring, and re‐thinking teacher evaluation. The body of the article indicates how these three trends are unfolding in Australia, Engla…

The problems of ‘competence’ and alternatives from the Scandinavian perspective ofBildung

2015

The paper aims to show how competence as an educational concept for the 21st century is struggling with theoretical problems for which the concept of Bildung in the European tradition can offer alternatives, and to discuss the possibility of developing a sustainable educational concept from the perspectives of competence and Bildung. The method of the study is conceptual analysis of ‘competence’ and Bildung. The paper concludes that (1) competence must be abandoned as an educational concept, as its problems cannot be solved due to the lack of a theory of educational content. With competence, the content aspect of education is obscured and hidden from public debate, and human autonomy is thr…

Higher Education in a Knowledge Society: How to Close the Knowledge Divide

2015

In this chapter, Higher Education in a Knowledge Society: how to close the knowledge divide, Richard Ennals and Hans Christian Garmann Johnsen discuss education policy in UK and Norway, and how national conditions might influence the role that universities take in social development. The new communicative reality: mobilisation and education breaking the institutional barriers. They can be met by initiatives like Quality Circles, or a Penny University. The underlying big problem is to what extent universities are really taking a role in reducing the serious knowledge and education level divide we see in western societies.

National Stories, Convergent Trends and Divergent Paths: Discursive Construction of the Higher Education and Knowledge Society – Nexus in Higher Educ…

2016

Higher education policy texts construct the relationship between higher education and knowledge society. The higher education discourse in Finland, Portugal, Germany, United Kingdom and United States over the last two decades typically presents the knowledge society as either an existing fact or as a desirable development towards which countries should aspire. The convergent discourse emphasises the importance of information and communication technologies, internationalisation, globalisation, and international context for policy making; the importance of research, science and technology, but also education, learning and skills and their role in bringing about the knowledge society. At the s…

Tendencias privatizadoras del modelo de financiación de la educación superior en Europa. Propuestas de la Unión Europea y el análisis del acceso aseq…

2020

The influence exerted by supranational organizations, such as the European Union (EU) in the configuration of educational policies, forces us to include the supranational sphere in the study of educational trends. A growing trend in the field of higher education is the increase in private investment and our objective is to measure its impact in recent years in the European context and if it puts at risk the affordable access to this educational level. To do this, in the first place, we analyze the different actions developed from the European Union on increasing private financing of higher education through various documents and work plans. Second, from the Comparative Education methodology…

Higher Education and the Knowledge Society

2010

Knowledge society may be defined as a discourse which is based on certain intellectual starting points in the analyses of modern societies, while as a concept it tends to create its own images, expectations, and narratives. The importance of higher education in this discourse is rooted in the fact that changes in science, research, and technology have changed the social role of universities. According to a radical perspective, a rapid metamorphosis is taking place in the relationship between knowledge production and university institution, whereas a more moderate view holds that recent changes challenge the traditional values found in higher education institutions.
